MEETING UPDATES
Letter from the 2024 Program Chair, Dr. Alecia Stein
Last month, we gathered again for the 2024 Florida Society of Anesthesia Annual meeting at the always classy, The Breakers Palm Beach – a meeting with many firsts! I had the honor of serving as Meeting Chair, planning my inaugural Annual Meeting with the help of my outstanding Program Committee, as the first woman to serve as Meeting Chair of the FSA Annual Meeting. I am proud to share that even with the heat of summer well upon us, we networked with, learned from, and assembled with a record-breaking number of registrants this year – topping 440 anesthesiologists from Florida and beyond. The positive energy was evident from the start with the unprecedented demand surpassing that of snagging 2 tickets to a Taylor Swift concert (just kidding!) The high demand led to securing two extra room blocks at nearby hotels. A first for the FSA Annual Meeting.
Another milestone was the successful feature of Keynote Speaker Dr. Leif Dahleen – a physician, retired anesthesiologist, and well-known financial education blogger for physicians known as Physician on FIRE, debuted a new hands-on workshop on cryoablation, and featured a set of clinical grab-bag snap talks that covered a variety of high-yield clinical topics. The mix of speakers was wide and diverse, coming from institutions and practices across Florida, and distant states such as California, Vermont, and Michigan. The program was also full of high-yield, hot topics including talks from experts in AI, GLP-2, practice management debates on physician unionization and rural anesthesia practice, as well as talks sponsored by our Pediatric, Professional Diversity, and Critical Care FSA committees, and more. This year we accepted the highest number of abstracts to our abstract sessions, which was a valuable experience for our state’s trainees and students to attend and share their research and challenging cases. Dr. Ronald Harter, the current ASA president attended to give the State of the ASA Address – a summary of what is happening at the national level and what is ASA doing for its members and finally, the University of Miami Residency Program reclaimed the coveted winning title at the highly competitive and always rowdy Annual Resident Jeopardy Competition – featuring 5 top anesthesia residency programs. Lastly, we could not have put forth the great meeting summarized here without the generous support of our industry sponsors. Sponsored events featured breakfasts, an Ultrasound Workshop and product showcases arranged in the exhibit hall. We look forward to seeing you next year back in Palm Beach. Mark your calendar, and save the date for June 6-8th, 2025! See you next year!

“I am so honored to be recognized by the FSA Board of Directors with the 2024 Presidential Engagement Award. I am grateful to work alongside so many dedicated physicians to showcase the incredible pediatric anesthesiology talent we have here in Florida. I could not have done this without the support of the Board and administrative staff, as well as the work of the members of the FSA Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia, who have dedicated their time to create a library of enduring educational material for the FSA membership on the website and the continuing Webinar Series “Hot Topics in Pediatric Anesthesia,” a platform for education and discussion of pediatric anesthesia topics for all FSA members, whether it be those who care for children occasionally or primarily.”
