Dr. Miguel Abalo
A cardiac anesthesiologist who graduated from the anesthesia residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he also served as chief resident. Following a cardiothoracic fellowship at Stanford, he contributes as an assistant professor at the University of Miami, focusing on resident teaching and displaying a strong interest in hemodynamic monitoring devices to advance medical care.
Dr. Nathalie Abitbol
An Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Miami. She obtained her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with Distinction in Research for pursuing a year long research fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. After completing her residency training at Montefiore Hospital in NY, she joined the faculty at University of Miami, where she is now Associate Chief of Anesthesiology at Sylvester Comprehensive Center and the Medical Director for CRNAs at UHealth Tower. Dr. Abitbol also earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and her research interests include AI and its innovative potential in healthcare.
Dr. Daniel A. Anaya
A Senior Member/Professor, Chief of GI Surgery and Head of Hepatobiliary Section in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology, at Moffitt Cancer Center. He is a fellowship trained Surgical Oncologist with a particular interest on the surgical treatment of patients with liver malignancies (primary and metastatic) and neuroendocrine tumors. He is an expert in developing academic programs that facilitate delivery of the highest quality of care, while also provide a framework to support education, research, and innovation in the field of cancer and surgery. In this context, He is also founder and director of a unique hands-on Course on Surgical Techniques in HPB Surgery, geared to incoming Surgical Oncology Fellows nationally. His projects have been funded through federal, industry, foundation, and local grants.
Dr. Steven Bradley
After graduating from the Howard University College of Medicine, he completed residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care and a fellowship at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Following residency, he served as a medical officer in the United States Navy for four years, stationed at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia where he was engaged in graduate medical education with the rank of Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. After completing his military service obligation, Dr. Bradley returned to the University of Chicago to complete a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Bradley currently practices in Tampa, Florida as a Critical Care Anesthesiologist at the Moffitt Cancer Center with a faculty appointment of Assistant Professor with the USF Morsani School of Medicine. His clinical interests include medical ethics in artificial intelligence, high fidelity medical simulation and medical education.
Dr. Sarah G. Bodin
She has practiced anesthesiology since 2000 starting with 20 years in academic anesthesiology, in Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. There she enjoyed educating residents and students in the operating room and simulation suites, and especially collaborating with multispecialty teams for both patient care improvement and education. Since 2019 she has practiced community anesthesiology in Florida, in multiple settings, currently as a private contractor with plastic surgery centers, spine and pain centers, and other ambulatory surgery centers. She enjoys working with the FSA and ASA to strengthen the specialty of Anesthesiology, through education, collaboration, advocacy, and networking. Dr. Bodin received her BS in Engineering Science from the University of Virginia, Doctor of Medicine from the University of Tennessee, and completed residency at the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Anne E. Cossu
Dr. Cossu completed her anesthesia residency at Weill Cornell NY Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 2012. She then completed a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship Children’s National Hospital in 2013. After working in private anesthesia practice at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, MA for several years she went on to complete a pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2016. She worked as a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist most recently at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA from 2020 to 2022 and prior at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN from 2016 to 2020. Currently, she is working at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University School of Medicine since 2022.
Dr. Steven C. Minear
He received his medical degree from Stanford Medical School and then went on to complete his training in New York, first at SUNY Downstate Medical Center for residency then a critical care medicine fellowship at Columbia University. Dr. Minear currently works as Staff Anesthesia at Cleveland Clinic Weston and is the Director of Research for the Anesthesia Division. He manages academic, industry sponsored, and investigator-initiated clinical trials, and his focus is on ICU hemodynamics and perioperative outcomes. Throughout his career, Dr. Minear has made significant contributions to the medical community through both his research and clinical work. He serves on the board of directors for the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists. Moreover, he serves both in the Committee for Critical Care Medicine and the House of Delegates for the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Khaled Dajani
An independant consultant in pediatric anesthesiology based out of Florida. Most recently he was affiliated with Wolfson Children’s Hospital, a level 1 trauma center in Jacksonville. He is professionally active in research, education and mentorship, and has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, sat on editorial and society boards, and lectured at the local, regional and national levels. Dr. Dajani also consults for several health care companies and was co-founder/editor-in-chief of several for-profit online educational platforms. He is a real estate investor primarily in the single- and multi-family asset classes. He trained at the Mayo Clinic, Cornell Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Baylor Texas Children’s Hospital, among others.
Dr. Ricardo Diaz Milian
A board-certified anesthesiologist in Critical Care Medicine and Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology, augmented by his expertise in Transesophageal and Critical Care Echocardiography. His academic journey began at Universidad Francisco Marroquin Medical School, leading to a surgical internship at Mayo Clinic, an anesthesiology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and culminating in a Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Northwestern University. Dr. Diaz Milian’s research, particularly in critical care echocardiography, ECMO, and medical ethics, enriches both clinical practice and scholarly discussions in anesthesiology, reflecting his commitment to excellence and innovation in the field.
Dr. F. Cole Dooley
An assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at the University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology, since 2015. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, IL, and completed a transitional internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He did his anesthesiology residency at the University of Florida and completed fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Allison Fernandez
An anesthesiologist specializing in pediatric anesthesia and pain management, wife and mother. She is faculty at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Dr Fernandez research interests are in safety and quality and pain management. Most of her research are with the Pediatric Craniofacial Collaborative Group and the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia Improvement Network.
Dr. Michael Franklin
He attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and did his residency in anesthesiology at Louisiana State University – Shreveport, where he worked as faculty for one year. Dr. Franklin then did a fellowship in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology at the University of Florida in 2017, and have remained on as faculty since then. His academic interests include opioid free anesthetic techniques for complex cardiopulmonary bypass cases, 3D echocardiography, and structural heart procedures.
Dr. Amanda M. Frantz
An Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology in the division of Critical Care Medicine at UF Health, since August 7, 2017. Dr. Frantz received her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. She completed an internship and residency in anesthesiology at Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a critical care fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology. During her residency, Dr. Frantz researched the antioxidant effects of vitamin C in cardiac surgery patients. Her clinical interests are cardiac, trauma, and critical care medicine.
Dr. Rodney A. Gabriel
A tenured Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Adjunct Associate Professor in Biomedical Informatics. He is the Director of Perioperative Informatics, Chief of the Division of Regional Anesthesia, and Clinical Director of Anesthesiology at the Koman Outpatient Pavilion Ambulatory Surgery Center. His research expertise is in applying artificial intelligence concepts into perioperative medicine, including machine learning-based predictive modeling and natural language processing. Dr. Gabriel is actively involved in the acute and chronic pain management of patients, especially focused on the reduction of opioid use performance of interventional pain modalities, including ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, peripheral neuromodulation, and cryoneurolysis.
Dr. Ralf E. Gebhard
A Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management. He also is the Chief of the Division of Acute Pain Management and Regional Anesthesia and serves as Associate Vice Chairman for Clinical Research. Dr. Gebhard joined the University of Miami in 2006 coming from The University of Texas‐Houston. In addition to his expertise in the area of Acute Pain Management, Dr. Gebhard has also proven himself to be an outstanding clinical researcher and scientist. He has conducted 25 clinical trials as a Principal Investigator and has received and has received significant grants to support his research. Dr. Gebhard has published multiple book chapters and 50 peer reviewed articles. He currently serves as a reviewer for numerous journals including Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia and Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
Dr. Benjamin F. Gruenbaum
An Assistant Professor in the Neuroanesthesia Division of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. Gruenbaum completed a clinical fellowship in Neuroanesthesia and a T32 research fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine and was supported by a Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research Mentored Research Training Grant to study neuroelectrophysiology and neural mechanisms of unconsciousness. He is heavily involved in educational and quality initiatives, serving on several regional and national committees.

Dr. Anastasia Jones
An Assistant Faculty at Moffitt Cancer Center in the Department of Anesthesiology, and an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida. Dr. Jones earned her MD degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. She completed an Anesthesiology Residency with the Michael E. Mahla Exceptional Resident of the Year Award at the University of Florida. Dr. Jones completed an Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of Florida. Dr. Jones’s current research is focused on disparities in acute pain management in cancer surgery.
Dr. Michael Kaczmarski
A Pediatric Anesthesiologist at Nemours Children’s Hospital – Florida, in Orlando as well as an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He is the site director for the pediatric anesthesia rotation for multiple residency programs both in Florida and outside of Florida. Dr. Kaczmarski has had work presented at both the national and international level. He also has a particular interest in the perioperative evaluation of pediatric posterior spinal fusion patients. Dr. Kaczmarski received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. Following completion of his residency, Dr. Kaczmarski completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children’s National Medical Center/George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Dr. Suzanne Karan
A Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She serves as the Vice Chair of Education, Residency Program Director and Chief Clinical Coordinator. She has also directs a unique 3 week course for the 4th year medical students at UR, called Improving Health Systems. Other interests include patient safety and quality. She served as the Assistant DIO for Hospital Based Programs until 2 years ago, and during that tenure, she was chosen as an AMA Health Systems Science Scholar. Her research interests focus on the interaction of sleep and sedation in conferring vulnerability to the upper airway and breathing, and also in anesthesiology resident professional identity formation.
Dr. Elizabeth Mahanna Gabrielli
An Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Management at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Division Chief of Geriatric Anesthesiology. She completed her medical doctorate at the University of Texas at Southwestern in 2007 and her residency in Anesthesiology at Rush University in 2011. She is board certified in Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical care. She is on the American Board of Anesthesiology’s Critical Care Committee since 2021 and previously was a question author since 2012. She is the Neuroanesthesia section editor for Open Anesthesiology, the chair of the Education subcommittee of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Anesthesiology Section, and the chair for the American Society of Anesthesiology Perioperative Brain Health Initiative.
Dr. Bridget Marroquin
An Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. She completed her MD degree at SUNY Upstate Medical where she received the Rural Health Scholarship. She currently practices Anesthesiology with a niche in both Obstetric Anesthesiology and Anesthesia resource management. She has developed curriculum and facilitated workshops locally and nationally with a passion for interprofessional education and team building. She is currently the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Anesthesiology. Nationally, she is active in the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA), a core faculty member at the annual SEA Workshop on Teaching. Dr. Marroquin is passionate about collaborative learning across disciplines and professions.
Dr. François Modave
He received a Ph.D. in computer science from the ENSEEIHT in Toulouse, France. For the first half of his career, he focused on artificial intelligence and mathematical methods of decision theory and game theory. He was eager to apply these methods to clinical questions and transitioned from computer science to biomedical informatics when he joined the Departments of Biomedical Sciences and Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso in 2010. He first joined the University of Florida in 2015 and has been in the Department of Anesthesiology since 2022. He has been funded by the NSF, NCI, NCATS, and AHRQ.
Dr. Basma Mohamed
An associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville. She completed a perioperative medicine fellowship at Duke University and deeply understands the intricacies of patient care in the perioperative setting. Her passion lies in optimizing clinical care for complex medical patients, emphasizing spine surgery patients. She was pivotal in establishing enhanced recovery after surgery and optimizing clinical pathways for surgical patients. Through her dedication and commitment, Dr. Mohamed continues to make a significant contribution to the field of perioperative medicine.
Dr. Christina C. Moore
Currently finishing her Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She attended Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine for medical school and then joined the University of Miami for her residency in Anesthesiology. Dr. Moore has vast research interests, with her most recent publication being “A comprehensive review of cerebral oximetry in cardiac surgery” published in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. Next year, she will begin working in private practice at Baptist Health South Miami Hospital.
Dr. Sindhu Nimma
An assistant professor and associate program director at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL. She finished her residency and fellowship in regional anesthesia at University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. He interests are focused on resident and fellow education, simulation teaching, regional anesthesia, and point-of-care ultrasound.
Dr. Brian Osman
He graduated from Drexel College of Medicine in 2008 and completed his Anesthesiology residency in 2012 at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL and then went on to complete a fellowship in Acute Pain & Regional Anesthesia. He worked as an Instructor in Anesthesia at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School before returning to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2014. He is currently the Chief of Orthopedic Anesthesia and the Director of Quality Assurance at UHealth Tower in the University of Miami Health System. Dr. Osman is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Management at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He is currently a committee member for Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) Office-Based Anesthesia Committee. His research interests include Safety in Office-based Anesthesia, Orthopedic Anesthesia, and Acute Pain and Regional Anesthesia.
Dr. Sher-Lu Pai
The Director of the Pre-Operative Evaluation Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Florida and an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Pai currently serves as the Assistant Treasurer for the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists (FSA), Chair for American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Abstract Review Subcommittee, Member of the ASA Committee on Ambulatory Surgical Care, Member of the ASA Educational Track Subcommittee on Ambulatory Anesthesia, Member of the ASA Committee on Scientific Advisory, Chair for the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) Communications Committee, Past-Chair for the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Committee, and Member of the ILTS Anesthesia/Critical Care Committee. Dr. Ajay D. Patel
He was born and raised in Michigan (Go Blue!) and completed his medical school/residency at Northwestern University. While in Chicago, he fell in love with pediatrics and decided pursue advanced pediatric anesthesiology training at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. Upon completion of his fellowship, he transitioned to full-time academic practice at the University of Iowa. Two years ago, Dr. Patel and his wife moved to sunny Florida to escape the snow. Within Anesthesiology, he has interests in global medical outreach, medical student education, and operating room management.
Dr. Anna B. Shapiro
She completed her anesthesiology residency at UCSD and her critical care medicine fellowship at Stanford University before practicing on the island of Guam for three years. She then returned as faculty to Stanford University before joining the faculty at Mayo Clinic in 2020. She splits her time between the OR and the MICU and cardiovascular ICUs.

Dr. Patrick Tighe
A professor of Anesthesiology and Orthopedics Surgery at the University of Florida and serves as the associate dean for AI Applications and Innovations in the College of Medicine. He also serves as the executive director of the UF College of Medicine’s quality and patient safety initiative. He is supported by the Donn M. Dennis MD Professorship in Anesthetic Innovation. Clinically, Dr. Tighe serves in the Division of Acute and Perioperative Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology. His NIH-funded research activities use artificial intelligence to better understand how perioperative factors and care delivery pathways influence postoperative outcomes.
Dr. Paloma Toledo
The Chief of Obstetric Anesthesiology at the University of Miami. Her research has focused on improving the quality and safety of care for women delivering infants in the United States and reducing peripartum disparities. She is a past chair of the FAER Board of Directors, was the ASA liaison to the ACOG Council on Patient Safety in Women’s Healthcare, and her research has been funded by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. She is an Executive Editor at Anesthesia & Analgesia.
Dr. Albert J. Varon
A Miller Professor and Vice Chair for Faculty Development in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Chief of Anesthesiology at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, Florida. He is also Immediate Past Chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness.
Dr. Varon completed a residency in Anesthesiology and Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital and obtained a Master of Health Professions Education degree (MHPE) at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Varon is a Fellow of both the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He is also a full examiner of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a founding member of both, the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists and the Trauma Anesthesiology Society.
Dr. Varon is the editor of the textbook “Essentials of Trauma Anesthesia” now on its second edition (English, Chinese and Japanese editions), and author of many peer-reviewed publications, editorials, and book chapters in the areas of trauma anesthesia, critical care, hemodynamic monitoring and resuscitation. Most recently, Dr. Varon was the recipient of the 2020 American Society of Anesthesiologists Excellence in Education Award and the 2024 Association of University Anesthesiologists Mentoring Award.
Dr. Anna Varughese
A pediatric anesthesiologist and serves as Professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Associate Chief Quality and Safety Officer and Perioperative Director at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins SOM in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Varughese also earned her Master in Public Health (MPH) at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2005. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) recognized her with a mentoring award in 2013. Her research focus includes health services, outcomes, and the quality, safety and cost components of patient care delivery. Dr. Varughese has had more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in major journals and books, and she has conducted many scientific presentations at national and international meetings.
